I don't know how the new system works. Cvetan is probably correct about it being some kind of ELO-style thing. If so, then the math may be complicated and they might not be able to explain it properly even if they want to. It's even possible that VR themselves might not understand the calculations, if it's being pushed through a third party ELO calculation service or something like that.
I don't mind that they changed it, but I have two major complaints about it... One is that the calculation isn't clear and possibly might never be. The other is that they should have pushed the last two years of history through it to arrive at the initial new rankings, instead of putting the top 100+ boats one point apart from each other. I'm proud of my 3-2-2 in Zanzib, but with a Category 6 label on that, it should have had an inconsequential impact on rankings. Instead, I jumped straight to the lead. Feels wrong.
I'm hoping Toppen and I can both stay patient with the new interface long enough to both complete the VOR (assuming it actually happens). At least that way, we can have the interpersonal satisfaction of seeing who beats who on that stage, head-to-head, regardless of where we finish against the rest of the fleet.
Unfortunately, there's a good chance I'll need to skip at least one leg of VOR. With this new format, you need to be online constantly, and I've got at least one week in November when I'll need to be offline most of the time. Also, my wife and I are both losing patience with me poking at my phone at 4 AM. I don't normally do that, but it's hard not to when you're at the front, can't trust the system to execute your "programmation", and can't schedule more than one or two maneuvers ahead without burning cards and then credits and then money fast. I'm not willing to start dropping large amounts of money to be able to schedule several maneuvers in advance. Ultimately, I think those who are more willing to do so, and those who are more willing to be up all night, will start beating me with ease. Then I'll quit without regret.
