I've added a start time selector to the Jules Verne chart.

3 hour steps in for one week (should be the same as GRIB steps).

All times are now displayed in UTC.

There is also an idea to do a mass start to make the game more fun. Suggested no-money option is Foils only, my boat is equipped that way too.

Great work Cvetan!!! :-D
Post by iconPost by GeGaX | 2017-12-23 | 17:59:51
Super job Cvetan, as usual;)
The times are in UTC and not in CET, why?
It's too complicated to implement?
I think that many will be wrong because they are used to the weather in CET / CEST, not you?
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2017-12-23 | 18:08:21
Because some players don't live in Central Europe.

It was CE(S)T for a long time because of the game update times of 08/20h local time. Now the game is TZ-neutral itself.

But I'll think about it once more.
Post by iconPost by GeGaX | 2017-12-23 | 18:17:34
Can be a 'local time' checkbox like in VR Dashboard ?
Everyone could choose the UTC time or local time which would avoid errors and gymnastics time zones, right?
Post by iconPost by Inicio | 2017-12-23 | 19:04:27
I think so too.
Local time avoid errors!

Many thanks!!!!!
Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2017-12-23 | 20:07:06
if you're sailing around the world, it is time to think UTC, even for virtual sailors
Post by iconPost by GeGaX | 2017-12-24 | 00:32:05
I do not think it's time to think in UTC time ...

The VR server shows us the time in CET / CEST.
VR Dashboard offers us the 2 times UTC and local (CET / CEST for me who am in FR)
If the router must be using UTC it would be really cool with a checkbox, we can activate the local time.

I take the 'problem' differently ...
If VR used native UTC it would not be a problem (VR UTC, Dashboard UTC and Zezo UTC)

Other case VR is CET, Dashboard UTC and Zezo UTC we all have to juggle for example for the FR + 1h for instructions and I am convinced that there will be huge mistakes there are people (me first)
At work I am focused on my work not on the game (I connect only when it is necessary with my phone)

Other ex: a person living in California (-9h) compared to the VR server so for the Rolex which starts on 26/12 at 02h, he must leave on 25/12 at 17h locally, Dashbord allows him to manage it locally, Zezo in UTC (-8h) it becomes a gas plant history ...
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2017-12-24 | 00:37:24
You just happen to be on the original VR time zone. The game shows local time for everyone now, so it may be CET for you, but it's EET for me and PST for someone in California.

So it's either UTC or local time. Showing CET makes sense only for players on CET (because it happens to be local time for them)
Post by iconPost by GeGaX | 2017-12-24 | 01:06:42
that I did not know, so if the game is local time for everyone and that VR Dashboard can put in local time why put zezo in UTC is a useless gynastic local everyone is on the same length of waves.

After I guess it may not be easy to implement for you, it complicates the task can be?
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2017-12-24 | 01:17:17
Printing it is two lines of code, but adjusting/acquiring the TZ it is not.
Post by iconPost by GeGaX | 2017-12-24 | 01:25:24
If you do the evolution, the display will be probably UTC + 1 for example for the FR, you can keep me informed?
because I should change the regex that currently only take ([A-Z]{3,4})

Post by iconPost by GeGaX | 2017-12-24 | 13:43:20
The regex is modified ;)
I prefer to take my precautions (not want to make mistakes).

Now the regex can read CET / CEST / UTC / UTC +/- 1->12 timezones and all other forms that remain in this format:
([A-Z] {3,} | [+ -] [0-9] {1,})

The Timezone column is also added to the table
I'll publish it for 14h

Great work Cvetan!!!

It looks the best start time is 12-24 2100UTC to 12-25 0000UTC and no-money option is Foils only.

There was another window on 26th in the previous grib. I'll check again soon and post the times here to keep track for a while.

25th 00z : 337
25th 06z : 309

Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2017-12-23 | 20:13:07
I suppose you mean time in hours

Are you considering a restart, Cvetan? So am I, half way accross the atlantic and bending southbound now

I really like the idea of a NMS mass start, although I will be stuck with my C0 and no foils. But than again, it will be interesting to see what happens.

What if you declare a start time that gives the best time to FdN in hours? Than we can all go out and promote this as an NMS event in our networks.

If everyone declares his boatname (and options), than we can follow eachother and see eachother. Make a sign-up topic for it here!

It will probably get you more visitors and maybe even some funding although that is never your main objective.

Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2017-12-23 | 20:13:30
maybe VR doesn't like it, but who cares ;)
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2017-12-23 | 20:26:10
I'm trying to organize something like that. Honestly, I'd prefer the later date because tomorrow is a day for family dinners and such ;-)

Without full pack we can't go after the record, but can have more fun by sailing together (and if the 10% in the file name is true we can even go for the previous record)
Post by iconPost by Inicio | 2017-12-23 | 20:45:58
That would be fantastic!
The start of the regatta seems without difficulties. A few hours without course changes around 50-55 TWA.
One click to launch the regatta and go ...
There is a request in the VR forum to create the possibility of giving a future order to start the race.
The best time seems to be between 24th, 18:00 and 03 UTC on Christmas Eve.

EDIT
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2017-12-23 | 20:55:45
The difference comes from a low pressure system that won't be there at the exact time. Early start maximizes the chances to catch it, but from what I've seen recently the real difference can be +/- 2 days, not 6 hours.

The Southern Atlantic/ st. Helena high is too unreliable in a 10-day forecast, that's why the starting criteria for real boats so far has been time to the equator.

The opportunity to start with a real boat in previous editions was rather nice, but it seems that the current attempt is not strictly tied to Spindrift, and Spindrift team does not give much information either.

P.S. It would be nice if someone <cough> with access to other weather models could share some insight ;-)

I just saw the flaw. You have to track progress in certain time, not on certain date. Can't compare 6-day progress to 7-day progress.

To make things simple set a X-day forecast in the upper right, short of the destination, and compare the distance.

would still be nice if you could add the option to 'start from start', Cvetan

and why?

I think I will take the window this evening and in the mean time keep monitoring zezo for a better option.
so frequent switching from my current position to the start position of the JVT for exploring routing options

I've been thinking about this. What we are trying to do is make this a normal race between us ...

But it is a record attempt, so choosing the right departure window is part of the game. What we could do to compare times is report boat name and start time. That gives us an idea of how to relate to eachother.

and for c0 sailors, the window might be different

to not decide is also to decide ;)

Post by iconPost by Inicio | 2017-12-24 | 20:24:01
True.
But if we decide a departure together for monotype Foils and another one for Code 0, we have both, close monotype racing and chasing record...

But if any thing, not tonight at 00.
This night we'll see and tomorrow morning we can decide... or decide not decide!
