Hi Cvetan -

I realize we could use the existing JVT chart for the Marseille-Carthage thing that just popped up, but if you are able to make time to create a separate chart for that, it would allow people to do routings for both races without needing to adjust options and destinations every time.

I guess they're trying to offer something to bridge the gap from the VOR finish to the next VOR and Clipper leg starts. Looks like Carthage closes the same day the next Clipper leg starts. Not much time for finding a good weather window. The people who started ASAP when the race opened a couple hours ago got a pretty good window. I started just now and it looks pretty good for the first part, but I'll slow down near the finish, so I'm not expecting my first attempt to last.

Thanks!

- Mom

Just saw it too. Will add it later tonight or maybe tomorrow

A two-week gap indeed. I was also concerned about the gap in the ad income ;-)

strange marketing, to never talk about a race until it has started and than wonder why there are so little (paying) subscribers ;)

started to see where the 30 knots will bring my polar bear on almost free foils
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2018-01-17 | 21:39:43
It has not started, because it's an open-ended race. Looks like a marketing strategy to exhaust last of the accumulated credits, so you have to pay the full pack for the next VOR leg.

carefull - you get a sail change penalty when you change sail (jib to spi) before starting. It will be applied to your race if you start within 300 s !! Second restart now, waiting for the 300 s sail chainge penalty to pass in VR Dashboard

what a lovely peace of french crap, that VR. despite that, it is still fun to play !

Post by iconPost by zezo | 2018-01-17 | 21:47:20
This one I can understand. You can't anticipate all possible usage cases, so you have to concentrate on the most important issues.

Or maybe not. The start is quite important part of the race. And other important issues took weeks to resolve.
Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2018-01-17 | 21:53:09
I even get the sail change penalty WHEN WAITING MORE THAN FIVE MINUTES AFTER THE SAIL CHANGE AND BEFORE STARTING THE ATTEMPT: it just start couting from 300 s .

I suggest from now on we call bugs frogs, grmbl, frenchiezzz, grmbl

I had a strange sighting that my boat moved forward and back at the same speed. Also I saw a strange drop in speed in the beginning same as your pic shows. I restarted and everything seemed ok then.

Race added. You have to reload the extension (like F5 in it and open again) to get the automatic link.
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2018-01-18 | 00:44:04
At a first glance it looks like the first good weather window will be in 2-3 days (15-hour run or so)
Post by iconPost by mak08 | 2018-01-18 | 01:12:34
I'm getting something like 13h30m on 2018-01-21T10:00Z. HG only sail. Two gybes.

(Hmpf, no. I think I miscounted the hours. It's 15hours.)
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2018-01-18 | 15:09:04
2018-01-21 00z 13h40m with full pack

So... after finishing a decent run that will hold up for a couple days and then get crushed by 1,000+ boats in the next window, I experimented, trying to avoid the "sailchange penalty at the start". My plan was to re-start, set it to HG, sail for a few minutes, and then return to base again... I figured that would put it in port with HG flying, so that a subsequent attempt could start with HG without penalty.

But it appears to reset to Jib every time you return to port. I don't think you can avoid that.

You can change it to HG before clicking Start An Attempt, though. Has anyone established whether or not doing that, and then waiting 5 minutes before clicking Start An Attempt will avoid the initial sailchange penalty? I don't have the Chrome extension, so I can't check it. If I understand DancingDJMike's post above, he has established that this doesn't work.

Is there any way to avoid it?

I suppose it's actually more fair if the answer is no. Then it impacts everyone equally even if it's an annoying bug. But if there's a way to avoid it, I suppose we might as well be public about it so that no one is gaining a sneaky advantage.

In the usual games the engine is running for all boats at 30-minute intervals before the start, to keep things in sync. Like the TWA for example.

The open races don't seem to have the boats running on the engine at all before you attempt a start, so there may be no way to avoid the penalty.

Looks like the best time to start is 2018-01-20 @ 21.00. Have programmed my cell phone to give me a loud alarm signal 1 hour before!

Foils, Hull polish, Winchs pro, Strong wind sails. Going for a win!

Same options here.

Two possible windows on 21st, both 0 and 12Z. May be possible to do 2 runs in a bit above 24 hours, or might be better to do only the second run starting earlier. Too early to tell.
Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2018-01-20 | 02:00:34
on my way for a 16.5h run now. maybe another one right after that

The 12-hour results also disappeared from the ranking. Looks reassuring for tonight - I was almost going to give up.
Post by iconPost by Lasse | 2018-01-20 | 17:03:36
Looks good around 12 o'clock CET tonight.

At what time do we start? :-)
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2018-01-20 | 17:27:45
About time. We'll see after the next grib.

You can get fine grained start time by manipulating the st= parameter

http://zezo.org/mc/chart.pl?st=1516503600

It's a number of seconds, so add or remove 600 or 3600 or whatever - it's rounded to 600 internally
Post by iconPost by Lasse | 2018-01-20 | 17:39:10
Cool! :-)
Post by iconPost by WoKeN | 2018-01-20 | 17:42:42
There will be a traffic jam of cloaked boats dans la mer Méditerranée at midnite...

Post by iconPost by zezo | 2018-01-20 | 17:51:25
Best time looks a bit after 0h UTC

Damn, tonight is the night to catch up sleep. The only day I don't have to wake up early is Sunday. And the record requires both staying late and waking in the morning for the new grib.
Post by iconPost by Lasse | 2018-01-20 | 18:17:47
But you can go back to bed after the 04.30 GRIB. :-)
Post by iconPost by YourMomSA | 2018-01-20 | 19:27:32
It's setting up nicely for folks in Australia and Asia to start in their morning and finish by bedtime...

03.00 looks like the best time to start. I will set an alarm and try to make a good time. There is however a risk that I will sleep over...

me too. a bit behind Cvetan but a lot... lol... like 27 nm ahead of record... i guess it's going to be the night of all records

Post by iconPost by nsp | 2018-01-21 | 09:57:24
LOL Your Mom is doing it in stealth mode :)))))

Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2018-01-21 | 11:20:55
ssst, don't tell anybody ;)
Post by iconPost by YourMomSA | 2018-01-21 | 15:26:41
I wish you could do stealth for specified time periods. I just wanted to mask my start time, but to do that, you have to turn it on for 24 hours.
Post by iconPost by WoKeN | 2018-01-21 | 19:51:37
the first day I saw you sailing for like 15-20 mins and then you went also into stealth mode (after I wished you good luck :O)
Post by iconPost by nsp | 2018-01-22 | 01:53:48
I saw you start.. you started right after me :P

but it seems going stealth made you going 5 secs faster...congrats MOm:))))

now cruising the meditarranean for cards ;) hoping there will be no new windows and place 138th holds ;)
Post by iconPost by Lasse | 2018-01-21 | 22:40:31
Same for me. 32 seconds after you. Place 142. The best I've had ever!! Hope it holds! :-)
Post by iconPost by BGSteMarine | 2018-01-21 | 22:49:57
A few more seconds more for me : #149. But not changing any more for a couple of hours now, so the chance to keep that one seems quite good now ;-)
Post by iconPost by nsp | 2018-01-22 | 01:57:19
It is highly probable that until 29 we have another Mistral with perfect conditions again.

In fact the Mistral today wasn't particularly strong it was more about a combination of TWS and TWD all the way, so the record can really sunk if the conditions repeat again.

I say this because a strong Mistral can blow near shore really above 30/35knts with gusts of more than 40...so..it is possible....it would even be nice if VR postpone the end of the event.

Post by iconPost by WoKeN | 2018-01-22 | 09:22:39
I wonder if you restart, will that erase your previous position or will that stay in case you have a less result with the next try?

This is about seconds, I was 2 seconds ahead of the next skipper and 3 seconds the next one.
Post by iconPost by GeGaX | 2018-01-22 | 09:31:19
You can do as many times as you want, only your best time will be retained
Post by iconPost by WoKeN | 2018-01-22 | 10:23:08
Ah ok, thanks!

I noticed that my first run in the JVT was still there also at the first gate this morning although I restarted.
Post by iconPost by GeGaX | 2018-01-22 | 12:57:17
Ditto for the TJV and generally for all record races ;)
Post by iconPost by Lasse | 2018-01-22 | 12:52:50
And you will se your best attempt as a ghost ship.
Post by iconPost by WoKeN | 2018-01-22 | 14:27:45
yup I saw that, just that I didnt want to give up my ranking from last night, (39th despite a totally fucked up last tack).

Well done!

As a matter of fact, you will also see the current race leader as a ghost ship, probably a bit in front of your own ghost... ;-)
Post by iconPost by rhino027 | 2018-01-23 | 00:08:45
the new record now is 9h1m25s by dagoyen!
Post by iconPost by Scheepsmaat Woeltje | 2018-01-23 | 03:35:22
Wauw, that means he went at an average of like 50 knots / 93km/h... Didn't know those speeds were even possible?
Post by iconPost by nsp | 2018-01-23 | 03:59:24
I really don't understand how it was even possible...Just looking for the weather...
Today there were a lot of people out there trying. with a time like this, there should be lots of runs under at least 10 hours....and this is an isolated case....
something is really strange here

I have been looking for a window to get a better run and i didnt see even one since the one we had in the weekend.

Really weird
Post by iconPost by WoKeN | 2018-01-23 | 06:56:57
I looked yesterday and there was no window faster than 14:10 hours. Besides, dagoyen is the only new boat in the ranking. If this time was possible, there should be more new boats in the ranking. But 3 hours faster, this is impossible, or he found a cheat.

Post by iconPost by nsp | 2018-01-23 | 04:18:42
Yes, totally impossible i just launched a boat and imediatly Dagoyen is 235,1nm ahead!!! A bug or something else...not possible with today's weather not even close to weekends records.

Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2018-01-23 | 08:10:03
sent a message to support (in a bottle) about dagoyen. will be redressed I guess
Post by iconPost by Lasse | 2018-01-23 | 13:00:00
The record is no more.
Post by iconPost by nsp | 2018-01-23 | 13:58:50
This situation doesn't bring too much credit neither to rankings nor the whole game.

It's really annoying! Ant it's one more proof we can't trust VR, that Bugs are there all around and even that perheaps manipulation and cheating is easier than we all are aware of.

Not feeling confortable at all now. Specially remembering my own episode of my ranking being changed 4 times during 15 hours in a previous leg of VOR. Without even an answer from VR.

Post by iconPost by YourMomSA | 2018-01-23 | 14:08:12
These record attempts where you can re-start have always had bugs like that. It has something to do with boats starting and re-starting. It happens in the Jules Verne round-the-world too, but it doesn't get noticed as much now that they do separate rankings at each gate and only show you the rankings for your latest gate. They have a way to find and clear these bugs, which they run once every day or two, so when it happens, it's just something to be patient about. I'm not sure why they haven't resolved the bug itself. Presumably they're having difficulty finding the root cause and/or it isn't a high priority.
Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2018-01-23 | 14:32:55
Is there anything WITH A PRIORITY at VR?
Other than counting the euro's that some still give them ;)
Post by iconPost by Lasse | 2018-01-24 | 23:35:05
You like Italy DancingDjMike? I'm going to my place in Spain, Cabo Roig. Don't have much to do except collecting cards now. :-)

Looking forward to a real race soon...
