I noticed Los Angeles - Hawaii in the "upcoming races" schedule, but it isn't available in the GUI yet... anyone have any info? It looks potentially interesting...

I'm waiting as well - planned to participate in that race. But now I'm stumbling over the information about the new ranking mode - and I really don't get it. Anyone smarter than me?
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2019-03-29 | 21:11:35
Sounds much like the current one, but weighted dynamically against more factors like number of players.

The original ELO system comes from chess where it's meaningful in 1:1 challenges. There should me modified systems for mass-start sports. Or in other online games. CS:GO pops in the first search.

In the end it probably means you get more penalty for sub-par performance once you get on the top. The idea is to encourage new players. With current system you can never beat YourMom. Hell, even I can't beat YourMom ;-), not to mention the Tipa/Buddha/luxair trinity.

If you ask me, there is no system that will allow a newbie to beat that trinity, but uncle Philippe know best.

Any system that diminishes past results to zero over time will allow newbies to eventually rise to the top, but they'd need to get to be as good as or better than the best and then perform at that level for the entire duration of the "diminishing to zero" time.

My guess is that once the new system is in place, Speedo will rise above everyone else.

PS... Still wondering about this LA-Hawaii race...

Hi guys :)

This reminds me of an old post I made out of for the fun, when I was level 10 player. Not that nsp is a top level now yet...still level 12...lol

At that time I calculated like more than 2 years at an impossible rate of nsp scoring always first and Your Mom, always 2nd to get in front of him :))

It seems that the new system will shorten this endeavour not mentioning the fact that that scenery of nsp being 1st and Mom 2nd,or any close situation is realistically impossible. As it is when compared to any trinity like the one Cvetan mentioned.

But at least the climbing in general will be fast.

As to the moment I'll get there or closer, I'll change the name of my boat to Your Dad. LOL

Have fun guys.

Not applicable to VR, in my opinion.
Post by iconPost by YourMomSA | 2019-04-01 | 02:06:04
Well, it turns out it's a record attempt. I guess that explains why it wasn't opened early. It also explains why it's called "LA-Hawaii" instead of "TransPac". My guess is that they wanted to do the TransPac but couldn't work out a deal with the TransPac organizers.

I decided to jump in and start as soon as it opened, just for the fun of trying to be "first to finish". I'm confident this finishing time won't hold up in the final results, but that'll be ok as long as the winning start window isn't later during this attempt.

I am the same, just wanted initially to post a time. The wind, or lack of it, is going to prohibit a decent time

Hello everybody,
any info about polars, where can I find it?
Thanks a lot.
Post by iconPost by toxcct | 2019-04-01 | 06:59:42
The boat is a Maxi Trimaran : http://toxcct.free.fr/polars/?race_id=400.1
Post by iconPost by f0eeb | 2019-04-01 | 10:45:50
In virtual regatta, it's write "Ultim"
Post by iconPost by toxcct | 2019-04-01 | 11:51:43
Yes, it's an "Ultimate", which is a kind of those big trimarans out there.

(but you can trust the polars data, The chart grab them from VR anyway ;) )

Warning:
Restarting costs you 600credits. This is not an April Fool's joke. There is no separate confirmation that you want to spend the money. What's worse, the credit display is not updated immediately, only if you log off and log on again.

Post by iconPost by toxcct | 2019-04-01 | 15:34:59
Greedy VR, as always.
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2019-04-01 | 15:36:37
The frigate fee to teleport you back? What if you don't have 600 credits?
Post by iconPost by mak08 | 2019-04-01 | 16:05:59
You pay or you continue sailing. That's actually the situation I'm facing.
Post by iconPost by YourMomSA | 2019-04-01 | 16:35:53
I guess it actually kinda makes sense... It's one of many cases where VR makes a decision that isn't necessarily bad but communicates so poorly that it makes users angry. If it was clear up front that each restart would cost 600 credits, then users could make effective decisions about when to start, whether or not to re-start, and whether or not to do the event at all, accordingly. But without that information, it's just going to make people angry.

Presumably if you buy the full pack, you can re-start as much as you want, though.

They just added a lot more events to the "Incoming Races" schedule, and it looks like a lot of them are record attempts. Honolulu-Yokohama, Atlantic Record, Med Record, NY-SF...
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2019-04-01 | 18:55:13
Support for the race added. Will add the predicted times table too.

Edit: Added the times too. Not sure about the colors, will have to gather some data.

Cvetan, you forgot to provide the entry in the races2.json file...

Ah, it seems that you did it in the time I wrote the post above... ;)
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2019-04-01 | 19:28:50
I provided it before posting, but it's cached for 24 hours, so a simple extension reload may not work if you have reloaded it recently. Have to tweak the httpd config a bit.
Post by iconPost by YourMomSA | 2019-04-01 | 19:32:07
Are the polars here different from Spindrift? I was using Jules Verne for my routing until now. It suddenly wants me to sail a very different course and is projecting a finish about 7 hours later than before.

Also, something seems to be wrong with the "Predicted Times" chart. I'm seeing a projected finish of about 154 hours if you start right now with full options, but the chart says 133 hours. (My own finish time is projected to be 142 hours from now, which would be a total of over 160 hours, which will wind up being pretty bad in the end).

This is the same course as the TransPac race, right? The multihull course record is about 102.5 hours on an Orma 60. Monohull course record is nearly 122 hours on Comanche. So... With an Ultime and our choice of start time... I'm guessing the winner should be able to do it in 90-96 hours. Maybe faster. Unless the entire month of April never offers any good start opportunities.
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2019-04-01 | 19:53:13
Yes, this is the single-handed version without the 10% performance gain of the full crew.

The numbers seem to match, but it's been a long day and I may have missed something.

Post by iconPost by YourMomSA | 2019-04-01 | 22:55:00
Thanks. The polar difference explains why my ETA jumped and also why my routing changed.

Also, the predicted time table's numbers look good now. Nice work, thanks!

The best news is that I can continue my run for "first to finish" even though the result will ultimately be non-competitive. The table is showing better start windows after my current projected finish date than anything expected to occur during my current run. So... nothing to lose by continuing. And maybe I can collect some cards along the way.

I don't know this part of the earth. Do you know which forecast system we need for a good race?
Are you already in race YourMom?

It's only when you restart whitout finishing a run.

Post by iconPost by YourMomSA | 2019-04-03 | 19:23:12
The dashboard seems to be showing incorrect ERTs. Not just normal variation in that kind of calculation, but something wrong. It seems to think the boats that started on Day 1 will finish with total elapsed times around 3-4 days even though we've been racing for 2 and we aren't halfway there yet.
Post by iconPost by mak08 | 2019-04-03 | 20:36:13
The ERTs are incorrect by definition :-)
The dashboard computes the average speed from the race time and distance given on the race info box. VR has modified these numbers one or two days ago. It currently says 4.500nm/4 days. The average speed and remaining distance is then used to estimate the remaining race time and added to the elapsed race time. As I said, I'm aware that this is technically incorrect.

I think mcmgj and others also took a shot at this. Maybe they have a better algorithm.
Post by iconPost by YourMomSA | 2019-04-03 | 21:23:03
No worries - I realize it's inherently inaccurate and I'm fine with that. But I got in the habit of looking at it during Spindrift, and something looks more wrong than "normal" about it for LA-Hawaii.

Random example... Gushami. Right now, VR says he has sailed 714 nm in 2 days, 4 hours, 52 minutes. And it says he has 1,526 to go. But the dashboard is somehow calculating 3 days, 13 hours, 26 minutes for the ERT.

Oh! I understand the problem now! It's using the 4,500 from the main info box... and it's saying since he has 1,526 to go, he must have completed 3,000 already... and then it's applying that pace against his DTF and elapsed time... Yeah... that would do it. Too bad they put a total distance of 4,500 in the main info box. The correct distance is something like 2,210.
Post by iconPost by mak08 | 2019-04-04 | 09:22:54
Hmm, I don't remember if I didn't notice distanceFromStart in the data or if I decided against using it, but it may be the better choice.

With ERT computation based on distanceFromStart, I currently get

Skipper Start Date ERT
NZ-Eligo - PYR 1.4.2019, 01:41:32 UTC 06d09h54m
Your Mom SA 1.4.2019, 00:04:56 UTC 06d10h47m
gushami 1.4.2019, 16:25:39 UTC 06d21h48m
DRICA vsc 1.4.2019, 00:03:56 UTC 06d22h58m
Hardtack 1.4.2019, 12:11:30 UTC 07d05h58m

I'll make a bugfix release tonight.

Post by iconPost by YourMomSA | 2019-04-04 | 12:22:44
Thanks. I think that number is actually distance sailed, not distance from start... so in some races, it might be a poor choice. Your earlier design was fine... until VR posted a terribly incorrect total race distance.

If you have an actual "distance from start", and it accounts for gates and buoys, not straight-line, then yes... that would be best.

It doesn't really matter right now for me or any of the other boats that started on Day 1... our times will all be crushed in a week or two. I just raised it because good ERTs will be helpful during the real run in a week or two.
Post by iconPost by mak08 | 2019-04-04 | 19:39:44
Yes, it is distance sailed. I pushed the new version anyway as it produces somewhat more reasonable numbers.

But if you need really good ERTs, your best option is to invoke the router on each of the boats' positions. The dashboard does that for you, you just have to subtract the start time.
Post by iconPost by YourMomSA | 2019-04-05 | 00:19:38
You're definitely correct about the accurate way to do it. But the dashboard ERT is SOOO much more convenient. ;-)

Hi Cvetan,

I just noticed that the title of this page is wrong (you probably copied it from the JV Record) :
http://zezo.org/honolulu/times.html

You might not want to name it "Times to the Equator", as we're sailing to Hawaii here :)

Post by iconPost by zezo | 2019-04-08 | 09:01:46
Thanks. I have to tweak the color palette a bit because right now it's all green.
Post by iconPost by toxcct | 2019-04-08 | 11:46:17
I see the palette a bit better.
yet the page title (the H3 element actually) still contains "Hours to the equator" ;)

Oh, I fixed the actual <title> but not the H3 ;-)

Hello to all,
are the predicted times for Record L.A. Honolulu in UTC Time ?
Thanks to all the team.
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2019-04-08 | 13:57:25
Yes, UTC. Mostly because the GRIB files come in UTC and this way the wind display is correct to the time of the start.

merci

Post by iconPost by YourMomSA | 2019-04-15 | 16:36:17
I don't think it's possible to see it if you haven't registered for the race. Currently the best time is 3 days, 13 hours, 15 minutes.
Post by iconPost by Dogzilla | 2019-04-16 | 09:40:24
Darn. You did it again. ;-)
Post by iconPost by mak08 | 2019-04-09 | 07:57:49
Off we go!
Regarding ERT, it's important to know that the calculation is now based on the average speed reached so far.
The wind is picking up over the whole race. Late starters, don't despair :-)

Two questions about the Friends tab and ERT...

-Sometimes the ERT column isn't there. What action is required for it to be there? My impression is that it's there if I initiate the dashboard while in VR's main page, but not if I initiate it after accessing Offshore Racing. Is that correct?

-Sometimes my own boat shows up in that tab... but often it doesn't. I haven't been able to figure out how to get my boat to show up. What action is required to see yourself in that tab?
Post by iconPost by toxcct | 2019-04-09 | 15:14:03
The ERT tab exists only for "Record" races ?

Click on your own boat in the race to allow the dashboard to gather the data, thus adding it into the Friends tab.

Post by iconPost by mak08 | 2019-04-09 | 15:39:12
The tab exists only for record races as toxcct said, but there's special server message identifying the race as record type, and sometimes the dashboard misses it. Exit and re-enter the race to fix this.

Regarding your own boat in the friends list, a corresponding message for your boat is requested by the game UI only if you click on your boat (I think), and it's cached by the UI. It will make a new request only after 5-10min later (again, only on demand).

There's also a bug in the friends table sorting procedure - sometimes re-sorting the table will make your boat appear.

Post by iconPost by YourMomSA | 2019-05-01 | 00:10:21
They just closed this race and opened the next record event. That's fine, but the login for this event is gone... I hadn't done the last couple races before this... Do we need to get in there to claim our credits for the finish and remaining cards, or did they change something to make that automatic? If we have to get in there, then they need to leave this event's entry point open for a while so people can claim their credits. I have a bunch coming, and I use them a lot, so I want them... I guess if that's necessary and they don't fix it within a day or two, I'll submit a support request.
Post by iconPost by Swedeville | 2019-05-01 | 01:04:53
They haven't made it automatic as far as I know. I want them too. Was planning on using some for Maitre C, but doesn't look like I'll be able to.
Post by iconPost by RunLikeTheWind | 2019-05-01 | 08:59:10
I got XP and VSR points but no credits for remaining cards nor ranking. I had already been upset by the 600 credits penalty for restarting. Like YourMom I was counting on these credits for the coming races. This is increasing my frustration. It is time for VR to better take care of their users by improving their communication and focus on important changes instead of cosmetic changes like map colors :/

Ceres posted in the VR forum that this will be fixed tomorrow. That's a relief. Possibly too late to use the credits toward Solo, but I'm not sure if I'll do that, and if I do, it'll probably be with a full pack.
