Parts that I think will be relevant to the game,

* Increase model horizontal resolution to 0.25 degree (~25 km) and
maintain the same resolution throughout the forecast period for the
atmosphere.
* Improved interpolation of grib2 files from the model’s native Gaussian
grid (see Note on Interpolation below).
* Removal of lower resolution output, and inclusion of new 0.25 deg
output onto NCEP web services.
* Provide the capability for weeks 3-4 forecast guidance for atmospheric
model only. Once a day at the 00Z cycle, the forecast length will extend
to 35 days with the same 31 ensemble members and uniform horizontal
resolution.

So, what I interpret there is more patches and puffs with increased resolution. More local effects. That I think will add to the realism of the game. In a fleet spread out across several km, more differences in wind conditions within the fleet.

Also, taking out the forecast horizon to 35 days!! Is that something you are likely to incorporate before the start of the Vendee, Cvetan?

Hi BooBill,
Have you read this somewhere or are you making a proposal ?
If you have read it, can you forward the link to the article that talks about it?
Thanks

https://www.weather.gov/media/notification/SCN_20-75_GEFSv12_Changes.pdf

To be clear, the changes are all with NOAA, but I think they will reflect through into the game. I'm assuming that's the case. Someone who works with the GRIB files, like Cvetan should weigh in here.

I've seen some email traffic (someone hit reply all on a broadcast :D ) and it looks like there will be format changes to the files, so another possibility is the uploads fail initially. Again, I got to defer to someone here.

This development concerns GEFS, ie the "ensemble" grib and not the 1 ° GFS currently used by VR.

@BooBill
Just found out that I also received this from NOAA and confirm what @M63 says. 😉

Well, that's actually disappointing. So, what's the difference between GFS and GEFS?

There was one major update in the GFS forecasts though, they now run in 3h steps completely up to 16 days. There used to be 3h steps for the first 10 days followed by 12h steps. Out of curiosity, does anyone know when this changed?

I haven't noticed and was still using the 12-hour files. Changing the scripts now to use the 3 hour files.

Hi Michael 😉,
I saw this on May 14, 2020 but I don't know how long it has been in place ...
