Hello, I know if you make major course changes such as tacking or gybing, your boat speed will reduce. However, how is boat speed affected by minor change, ie one or two degrees?

Thanks for that. Is there any information regarding what constitutes a change. For example, you can gybe, but only change course by a very few degrees.

Gybe/Tack as a change of the side of the boat from which the wind is blowing.

Even 2 degree change will be considered a gybe if it crosses 180, but it does not really matter. With the sporty boats used in VR there is at least 30 degree gap between the optimum downwind angles.

The penalty itself is 75 seconds at half speed with pro winches and 300 seconds without them.

Few other questions regarding those penalties :
- if we "simultaneously" change the sail and gybe/tack, do we have a double penalty ?
- if we change the sails twice in a very short time, let's say less than 5 seconds (ex : Jib -> C0 -> Jib), there is a risk of having a penalty ?
- if we change the sails twice in a short time, let's say the 2nd change 2 minutes (< 300 s) after the first one without pro winches (ex : Jib -> C0 -> Jib), is the penalty cumulative (600 s) or there only would be 300 seconds penalty left after the 2nd sail change ?

If you change sails fast enough, so the server sees the last sail to be the same as the first one, the no penalty will be applied .

If you change sails fast enough, so the server sees the new sail different than the first one, then you will get a penalty for one sail change.

If you change sail while being paying penalty for a prior sail change, then I don't know yet, but that would be tested easily with the VR dashboard (actually testing it right now on the Atlantic Record...)

However, Sail Penalty and Gybe/Tack Penalty are cumulative though.

Well, regarding the sail changes, if you change sail when already being penalized for that very same reason, the penalty counter restarts (300 seconds without pro winches, 75 when equiped), but the speed is still limited to 50%.

However, all other cases are cumulative.
That means that you CAN HAVE a sail change penalty, a tack penalty, AND a gybe penalty, ALL THESE TOGETHER.

There is double penalty - 25% boat speed after a sail and tack change. You can even get a triple penalty if you add a gybe AND a tack.

On your other questions - it depends. Commands are submitted to the server with a time stamp of whole minute, and the server executes them sometime after that minute.

The "Whole minute" is on your local clock, so if your clock is 4-5 minutes in the future you are effectively submitting a programmed turn 5 minutes in the future.

As long as you happen to be within one minute both client and server side it does not matter if you have submitted 1 command or 10 - only the last one takes effect.

Make that "4-5" minutes.

The commands are submitted in the form "at 12:29 steer to TWA 45"

So if your computer thinks it is 13:10 now, it will say to the server "at 13:11 steer to TWA 45" even if it's 12:30 according to the server clock.

Otherwise I fully agree with you. Even in the times of NTP-on-by-default the average user PC is not guaranteed to be in sync up to the millisecond.
