Looks like there are 39K or so boats in the race for this leg. My memory may be bad, but seems like it was closer to 60K for some legs. ??

You can see the numbers for each leg in 'Your race History':
Leg Particiapants
1 74677
2 84185
3 68533
4 65423
6 60499
7 looks like 46717 today
so just over half the max which was leg 2...

It's probably pretty normal for the leg from Europe to Capetown to get the largest participation. There's a lot of hype and publicity, and people get excited and give it a try. Then a certain fraction loses interest, and then a little more after each ensuing leg.

Leg 7 will be open for four more weeks... It might still get over 55,000 entries by the time it closes. That would put its attrition rate at a similar level to the prior leg-to-leg losses.

It's more a consequence of the pricing. With past games being 20EUR for the entire race you did not have reasons to quit mid-race.

You could add in this scenario the lack of prizes as in previous VORG editions. Although it was a prize reserved for a few players, it is possible that the hope of winning a trip, a parka or even a cap kept some guys alive in the game. Maybe some guys I know, fully capable of winning a leg, would not be out of the game if at least this point has stayed.

(Don't forget the chat from the old version which was awesome too)

I would like to see a pricing structure that encourages completing the whole race, not just a leg or three. Perhaps a decreasing price for the next leg, based on finishing the last leg? Miss a leg, reset the price structure. That is incentive to race every leg.

Fixed price for whole race. No NMS.
All have full options.
No cards.
Prizes (not just for the top 5).
But make sure that prizes are achievable. Promising that a winner will be on a leg in the next Clipper race is not sensible.
I know of some that won prizes in the past but VR refused to send them outside of France.

Who pays for prizes? Is it VR or the real race organizers?
