A lot of money too. The running price of 1000 points is around 10 EUR.

Unless you are really good, then it's a bit less, but still at least 500 EUR to get you close to the top.

That's certainly one way to look at it.
On the other hand: I started with a new boat on November 1st, 2017, after having decided not to spend any money on the game until it has stabilized and improved.
I have started in 30 out of 51 races since and collected about 23.000 points. This means that it is possible to reach level 14 as no-money-sailor in two years. It's more a question of a clever use of the credits earned. And it can be as exciting to fight for place 500 with a two-options boat as to fight for 50 with a full pack.
However, I fully agree that it is impossible to reach the top 200 with such a policy. And the question of how long VR points remain valid is still open.
By the way, I think that the game has improved considerably during this year and shall probably start with a paid boat at the Route du Rhum.

I wonder if there is a link to see the complete level 14 list. We discussed it here with some friends back snd forth. Question is, how many sailors sre in level 14? I guess I get an answer here ;-)

Easy to reply on your last question.
Some month ago the level don't accept more than 1000 sailors, so now we are more than this limit.
I reached level 14 with 2 boats without spend money ...
