I've been watching the routings for 2-3 days now and it's really interesting to see how volatile it is. A couple days ago, it briefly wanted us to go North of Sri Lanka. Another day, it wanted us to go hard South and hug the Australian coast, only to come North as late as possible to meet the Buoy 2 requirement. Then it came back to a median route. Now it wants Malacca Strait (without going North of Sri Lanka). This may well be a race where someone taking a crazy flyer on Day 1 looks brilliant on Day 3.

And yesterday it was going SW of Sumatra but N of Java.

It's all because the stable CCW circulation around Borneo creates favorable conditions a bit to the North, but there may be a low pressure system forming between Australia and Indonesia that will favor the South route.

That's not a big problem.

The real problem is that the Malacca strait sits in the wind shadow of Malaysia so the wind is low AND in weird patterns caused by the mountains.

Total change in routing in the last 12 hours. Back to a South route, after recommending the Straits of Malacca all day yesterday. And now it seems to not even be close. It would take us ~198 hours to get to Belitung via the Straits, and we can get to Jakarta via the outside route in 174 hours. What changed to produce such a dramatic difference? I can't remember exactly what winds we were seeing yesterday.

It seems that the instability will persist until after we have to commit to a route, a day or two into the race. It'll be a fascinating race for whoever picks correctly and a frustrating race for whoever doesn't.

I think it's mostly about a low pressure system extending or not from Australia to Java.
